Photography Studio Lighting Guide

Lighting for portrait photography?
I have a very important photo shoot coming up at my workplace. I will be taking pictures of all the top managers for our company website. This is something truly professional and I am only an amateur. I have never worked with studio lights before. Can anyone guide me on what lights I would need and if possible, a guide on how to set them up. I will have full length shots of these people and maybe some mugshots as well.
I’d appreciate some serious replies please. ![]()
Thank you so very much for the detailed answeres. Unfortunately, there is still some jargon there which I don’t undrestand. I know it is difficult to explain to a complete lighting noob but I will try my best to read through the linked articles and gather as much as I can.
Can I see a diagram somewhere which shows where the lights will be placed?

basics.
You will need.
3 light stands
3 flash guns
3 shoot through umbrellas
white cards as reflectors.
Remote triggers to connect everything.
Principles
basics dictate three kinds of lights
1. Main light – provides the main source of light. Typically above the subject 45 degree angle
2. Fill light – just using main light can cause some un pleasant shadow areas. Place it opposite to the main light, set at half power of the main light. Sometimes, people use white cards to fill in the shadows. Pay attention to the eyes. Nose, chin and upper neck area and notice the shadow.
3. Hair light or kicker. This is used to seperate the subject from the background. It can create a rim around the subject, or over expose the back completely white.
