Photography Studio Equipment For Beginners

Studio lighting kits for beginner portrait shooting, will you help me shop?
I’d like to explore self-portrait photography and I’m in need of lighting equipment. I was wondering if you would help me shop on the BH Photovideo website for the best, not too expensive (student budget) kit. I’m a big fan of Cindy Sherman, and I’ll be shooting myself as the subject. I’ll be dressing up and posing differently. For now I’ll be shooting with a white background, which will be a sheet (if you oppose this, I’d like your advice as well).
Do you think the softbox is good for a beginner/practice shooting? Or what about the one Umbrella Floodlight kit?

Your help is much appreciated, thank you.
Only one suggestion, drop the white sheet, get some pastel neutrals, white will play with all your other questions like there’s no tomorrow.
